| LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights attract a
great deal of attention as “a light for the 21st century”. This
is the field where the market is fast growing as the LED light
can be an alternative light source to a conventional incandescent
bulb and fluorescent bulb. Compared to an incandescent lamp (bulb
type), LEDs have lower power consumption and a longer lifetime.
There are a number of advantages including being environment-friendly
and having an excellent response speed. This technology is already
introduced into a broad range of applications such as illumination,
back lights, indicators and decorative lighting. |

The major characteristics
of LEDs are their energy efficiency and long lifetime. The
power consumption is 1/5 to 1/10 less and durability is 10
times longer compared to light bulbs. In LED technology development,
the primary three colors of light have been developed and it
became possible to realize a full-color display, which is utilized
in coloring the display field.

 |
A great success
of the blue LED development contributed to complete development
of primary three colors of light and to realize a full-color
display. |

Wavelength: The highest level of luminosity
of LEDs with wavelengths of 470nm for blue and 525nm for green.
White light emitting and vivid full-color displays are produced
by combining the three colors including the red LED. |

We have promoted research and development on LEDs (light emitting
diodes) and LDs (laser diodes), using gallium nitride (GaN)
as a base by utilizing our macromolecule technologies that
have been accumulated in the area of automobiles. We also successfully
developed blue LEDs, green LEDs, purple LEDs and white LEDs,
named “TG White Hi”, with the world’s top level luminous intensity
and started mass production.
We can expect further development of Optoelectronics based
on LED technology in order to apply to a broader range of industries
such as illumination, picture images, healthcare, optical communication
and traffic-related (traffic signals). We put our efforts into
its research and development to meet various future demands. |

| TG has accumulated unique galvanizing and
thin-film technologies such as vacuum deposition and sputtering
in order to meet demand for a decorative finish on interior
and exterior products. In 1986 (61st year of Showa Era), TG
launched LED development using gallium nitride (GaN) under
the direction of Prof. Isamu Akasaki of the Faculty of Engineering,
Nagoya University (Currently University Prof. of Nagoya University
and Prof. of Meijo University) and Toyota Central R&D Labs.,
Inc. In the following year, TG was contracted by the Science
and Technology Promotion Group to develop manufacturing technology
for blue LEDs and achieved great success in its development. |
