[Representative Products]
The Optoelectronics Business Unit studies and develops a gallium nitride
(GaN) -based light-emitting diode (LED) and a laser diode (LD) with
technological expertise accumulated in the high polymer auto parts
area. TG succeeded in developing and mass-producing blue LED, green
LED, purple LED, as well as white LED, TG White Hi, all
of which are the brightest of their kind in the world. The optoelectronic
area based on LED technology has a lot of potential in its application
and the development of many products such as lighting systems, images,
medicine, optical communication, and traffic light.
[Technological Themes]
The characteristics of LED are its energy saving and long life. It
consumes only one-fifth to one tenth as much electricity as a bulb
and has more than ten times durability than the bulb. As LEDs for
three primary colors of light - blue, green, and red - have been already
developed, they can provide full color expression and are used in
color expression areas. We briefly explain technological themes and
needs in each field in LEDs are used.
Lighting systems, displays, cellular phones (color liquid crystal
backlight), and traffic light require a high level of brightness.
Auto components, medical devices, and measuring instruments need more
reliability. Auto parts also require no mercury and less energy consumption.
Optical communication demands more capacity.
There are other challenges about LED, including reduced energy consumption
in the area of household electrical appliances and additional luster
in the full color display area. |
