Progress in recycling technology for EPDM vulcanized rubber
EPDM vulcanized rubber, which has excellent durability and ozone resistance characteristics, is used for a variety of purposes including weather strips. We concentrated on the fact that the intermolecular bond energy of the cross-linking bonds in the rubber molecular chain is weaker than in the main chain bond. We upgraded the quality of recycled rubber by devulcanization with shear flow stage reaction control technology* for selectively cutting the cross-linking bonds. Vulcanized rubber is recycled as reclaimed rubber by giving shear force to the waste vulcanized rubber generated during the process, which is input with the continuous devulcanizing equipment by heat and pressure. The properties of the recycled rubber are equal to new rubber. Yokohama Rubber licensed the technology to start a new business of recycling the waste vulcanized rubber generated in the tire manufacturing process as materials for new tires.
