A newly developed airbag steering wheel
supports comfort in a car
As a car increasingly becomes multi-functional, a driver is required
not only to operate a steering wheel but also to do many other things
while driving a car - using audio devices, a navigator, and an air
conditioner, opening or closing windows, and adjusting the lighting
system. This distracts his attention and increases the risk of accidents,
including those caused by inattentive driving while using a cellular
phone.
TG developed a new generation airbag steering wheel to address this
problem. Many switches are integrated around a horn on a steering
wheel so that a driver can be concentrated on driving. Much improvement
has been also made in developing an airbag unit to increase its safety.
Pursuing smaller, lighter, and safer products with better operability
We first worked on the theme to make a product smaller and lighter.
We could make the product thinner while maintaining its strength by
using magnesium alloy for a unit. It weighs 50% less and is now one-third
the size of the old product. The new product has also incorporated
a dual inflatorwith two gas-generating devices, which controls the
expansion of the airbag depending on the speed and conditions of the
impact during an accident.
Switches for the audio device, a car navigator, a cellular phone,
and a blind monitor corner are allocated on the right and left areas
of a center airbag unit to increase operability, so that a driver
can be spared from wasteful movements as much as possible.
This product has been adopted to the Cardina, and mass-produced. TG
will continue to contribute to improving the operationality and auto
safety by developing multi-functional, more reliable steering wheels. |
