Accelerates rubber recycling in move toward carbon neutrality

Toyoda Gosei Sets Mid-Range Target for Waste Reduction

Kiyosu, Japan, August 19, 2021: Toyoda Gosei Co., Ltd. is making efforts to reduce the waste generated in the production of automotive parts as one of its move toward carbon neutrality. It has now set a new mid-range target of a 50% reduction in waste by 2030 (compared with 2012 levels).

At the company’s Morimachi Plant (Shizuoka, Japan), the recycling lines for some weatherstrip products were moved to a dedicated building in April 2021, and efforts to return the waste rubber generated during production to its raw material state for reuse have been intensified. The recycling process makes use of Toyoda Gosei’s original technology in two areas. One is devulcanization, where molecular bonds* formed to give rubber elasticity are cleaved and the material is returned to a state in which it can again be used as a raw material. The other is metal separation, where metal incorporated into the product to increase its strength is finely shredded and removed.

The company will also introduce this technology in other plants in the Toyoda Gosei Group to further reduce waste materials.

*A sulfur compound is mixed into rubber material and heated (vulcanization), linking the polymers in the rubber and the sulfur compound.
